19th century

The nineteenth century runs through many styles: from the Neoclassical and Empire manner of its first decades, through the Restoration years, to the eclecticism of its second half, which revisited Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque forms. It is also the century in which furniture and objects moved from the workshop to small-scale manufacture.

With a nineteenth-century piece we look for consistency: period woods, hardware and techniques, replacements stated openly, surfaces that have not been harshly stripped. When a date is an estimate we say so, and we always note what has been restored.
